Occupational Therapists (OT’s) spend their days helping people with sensory, physical or cognitive disabilities to be as independent as possible in all areas of their lives by addressing the social, psychological and environmental factors that can affect patient’s functioning in various ways.
2018 is going to be a big year for Occupational Therapy (OT) in Cape Town, RSA as two international OT congresses are scheduled to take place in Cape Town in May– WFOT, the leading event on the international calendar for OT’s and the first International Sensory Integration Congress (ISIC.)
What’s great is that these congresses will be taking place in the same week, therefore with just one flight/trip to Cape Town, you get to obtain a wealth of knowledge listening to lead experts in various fields of OT, interact and build an impressive network with fellow international OT’s and at the same time visit the African continent.
The first congress taking place is the World Federation of Occupational Therapy Congress (WFOT). This event will take place from the 21-25 May. The theme of the 2018 congress is ‘Connected in Diversity: positioned for impact’ and the program will feature world-leading experts, unique social events and an exhibition. Guest speakers have yet to be announced. For more information visit the event website or the WFOT Facebook page.
There are grants available for OT’s from the UK to attend the event. For more information and to apply for one of these grants visit this page: https://elizabethcasson.org.uk/news-insights/launch-grants-attend-wfot-congress-2018/
The weekend thereafter, 26 & 27 May, Cape Town will be hosting the world’s first International Sensory Integration Congress (ISIC) at the beautiful Lagoon Beach Hotel in Cape Town. The event’s website will be launched during the first week in November, however, you can currently stay up to date with the details of the event by visiting the event facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/ISICSA/
With Cape Town having recently been nominated as ‘The World’s most beautiful city’, ‘The World Design Capital’ and‘Best Food City in the World’ and with the variety of activities on offer- ranging from chilling on the beach, hiking a mountain to wine tasting, the ‘Mother City’ of South Africa, Cape Town presents itself as the perfect place to host these events. If you need any more convincing as to why Cape Town is our favoured city, read here.
The timing of the congresses lend themselves exceptionally to students wishing to attend the congresses and do an internship. June- August are the busiest months for interns in Cape Town as these are the summer months in the Northern Hemisphere, the months in which students have the most freedom to travel and gain practical knowledge in their field of study.
VACorps hosts OT students looking to do internships by placing them at local Cape Town sites where numerous fields of OT can be learnt and applied. VACorps works alongside the students and college/university supervisors to ensure that all credit requirements are met and that the students receive maximum benefit from their internships. For more information on this internship program and to read reviews from previous OT interns visit this page. VACorps would also be honoured to assist any OT lecturers who wish to attend the congresses and find out more about the VACorps OT internships.
So don’t delay- register to attend the congresses, start looking at purchasing plane tickets and get in touch with us if you are interested to find out more about the internship opportunities available to OT’s in Cape Town. We hope to welcome you to our beautiful city in May 2018.
