Position: Public Relations/Health and Human Services
Number of available positions: 2
Duration of internship: 12+ weeks

Internship Description:

(Public Relations) Those applying for this internship are expected to have a background in Journalism and an understanding of public relations. More importantly, applicants for this internship must be highly motivated and have a passion for working in the non-profit sector.

(Health and Human Services Fieldworker) The PSFA Fieldwork assistant will work with staff members to monitor and evaluate the efficiency of the PSFA feeding system. This job will entail visiting schools across the cape peninsula to check hygienic standards in kitchen facilities, perform stock checks and calculations, interview school kitchen staff and update the school's feeding file. The only applications who should consider applying are those who are passionate about poverty alleviation and plan a career in the sector. Intern applicants must have excellent diplomatic and people skills in addition to maturity and motivation. Due to the mobility required to visit schools across the peninsula, interns who are accepted to this position will also need to rent a vehicle during their stay.

More about the Organization:

Peninsula School Feeding Association (PSFA) is a Non-Profit Organisation, established in 1958 when the Apartheid Government discontinued school feeding. For more than 49 years, PSFA has been providing meals to hungry children in primary schools and other educational institutions. Our mission is to combat the prevalence of hunger in children attending schools or other educational institutions in the Western Cape, through school feeding and developmental initiatives, that will promote self-sufficiency and household food security.

Our Aims Include:

  1. the reduction of short-term hunger
  2. the provision of school feeding to enhance children's ability to learn
  3. increasing learner attendance at school
  4. the promotion of parental participation at school
  5. the promotion of food/vegetable gardens to improve household food security

With a constituted mission to "improve the general health and welfare of school children" (PSFA's Constitution, 2(a)), PSFA addresses the fundamental human need for food and sustenance. In the face of diminishing government allocations to address school feeding, PSFA envisages an even stronger imperative for it to exist as a non-profit organisation, providing this grassroots service. PSFA is an established, audited, non-profit organisation, with a 48-year track record in the feeding of under-privileged school children, and the only organisation in the country established to specifically and comprehensively address hunger in children attending primary schools, high schools and special schools.
