Professional Internships in Cape Town

Observatory Junior School

Position: Teacher
Number of Available Positions: 3
Length of internship:4-12 weeks

Although Observatory Junior School is under-funded by the government, many of the school's students make a lengthy commute on the train from the townships to attend class. The student body is predominantly Xhosa, and as a consequence, you will greatly benefit from VACorps language training. Your teaching responsibilities will vary, depending upon the teacher you are assigned to work with and grade level of your class, although you will undoubtedly be asked to help the students develop their English skills. As both a mentor and role model, you should expect to make lasting friendships with your pupils.

"Over the years the demographics of Observatory Primary School have changed significantly. Many of the learners travel great distances daily in order to attend this progressive multilingual school."
