The VACorps Internship Program in Cape Town, South Africa
FoodTents
Are you interested in addressing problems of food insecurity with new, innovative strategies? Do you have a green thumb? If so, Heart Global’s flagship project, FoodTents, will provide you the opportunity to engage both of these qualities!
FoodTents addresses the problematic feeding schemes of NGOs and schools that struggle to provide nutritious foods to people, especially children. As the project's manager, Meghan Perry explained, "Millions of South African children go hungry everyday. In response to this ever increasing crisis, FoodTents offer a sustainable, cost-effective, low maintenance solution to provide those in need with fresh vegetables on an ongoing basis." By erecting these large tents made of shade cloth, these FoodTents function as revolutionary, make-shift greenhouses which significantly increase the production of fruits and vegetables. In the first semester of
As an intern with FoodTents, your duties would be those of a dynamic maintenance officer. This includes assisting with the implementation and building of FoodTents, collection and delivery of FoodTents components to beneficiaries, and regular visits to these beneficiaries to offer support and ensure the tent is being cared for. You will also have the privilege to work on the development and running of the FoodTents’ Skills Development Programme to empower those at the very grassroots level.
This internship is the perfect opportunity for those with a horticulture and/or agriculture background who are passionate about the social problems of food insecurity, and looking to engage with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. By working as an intern with FoodTents, you would find yourself surrounded by a vibrant team and gain a wealth of knowledge and experience in this very important and specialized field!
