Are you passionate about working to address social challenges? Are you interested in learning more about the “Social Enterprise revolution”? Well the opportunity to work for Heart Global is at your fingertips! Based in Cape Town, Heart Global focuses on the development of social enterprises, and was recently acknowledged for their work as the first to receive the Emerging Social Entrepreneur of the Year award by SASE (South African Social Entrepreneurs) in partnership with GIBS and Ashoka!

The vision of Heart Global is to address a diverse range of social and environmental issues in South Africa by working together to create, incubate, and establish sustainable social enterprises that work. Heart works from a business model comprised of two parts, “The Incubator” and “The Funds.” Heart’s Incubator provides selected start-up Social Entrepreneurs with support services through various phases of their development that help establish these businesses’ sustainability. “The Funds” is Heart’s social investment division. that finances the Incubator’s services. By identifying social investment opportunities to Investors through specialist fund management services, they raise capital which finances the Incubator’s services.

Through this strategy and their commitment to innovation and social change, Heart has established an impressive portfolio of social enterprises that address a diverse number of issues South Africa is faced with. One example is FoodTents. FoodTents addresses the problematic feeding schemes of NGOs and schools that struggle to provide nutritious foods to people, especially children. FoodTents has addressed this problem through their big tents made of shade cloth that function as revolutionary, make-shift greenhouses which significantly increase the production of fruits and vegetables. In the first semester of South Africa’s school year, eighteen tents were erected in various schools, hospitals, and NGO’s, and saw a direct social impact of 1440 people and indirect impact of 5760 people. Heart’s achievements have been recognized and rewarded by multiple organizations, including not only SASE, but also LGT Venture Philanthropy, and World Economic Forum for Africa.

There are three types of internships at Heart Global: Fundraising, Web Design, and Event Coordinating.

As an intern a part of the Fundraising team, you can expect to spend half of your time in the office, and half in the field visiting evolving projects and meeting with Heart’s associates. You responsibilities will include sourcing equipment, materials, and donations, networking with Corporate Social Investment officers, initiating and coordinating fundraising events, and much more. Your experience in Fundraising with Heart will provide you with new skills and techniques as practiced by Heart, as well as a wealth of knowledge in how fundraising works in a social investment organization.

In a Web Design internship with Heart, you will have the opportunity to hone your skills and employ your creativity. Your responsibilities will include: developing the websites of Heart’s partner social enterprises; utilizing design, imagining, and user interfacing when creating web layouts; performing web programming using HTML, JavaScript, and CSS; performing functional requirement and test specification; and doing web-application testing. This is a great opportunity for web designers to work in a socially conscious company that is also very well established and successful.

For those interested in completing an internship assisting as an Event Coordinator with Heart, you can look forward to assisting a vibrant, driven staff in completing a number of imperative tasks to the organization and helping ensure ideas materialize successfully. You will assist with maintaining Heart’s contacts and managing information distributed to those contacts; assist in marketing events and contacting important players to those events; contacting the media and ensuring information is made available to them quickly; and working to help source and obtain sponsorships for Heart. Through your work, you can expect to develop your project management skills, communication skills, coordination experience, and professional experience that sets you a part from all others!
