The VACorps Internship Program in Cape Town, South Africa Journalism Internships
A journalism internship in South Africa will expose you to the abundant and diverse factors that make Africa what it is. Ubuntu is a South African term that emphasizes the spirit of being humane to others. It is also described by Archbishop Desmond Tutu as follows:“A person with Ubuntu is open and available to others, affirming of others, does not feel threatened that others are able and good, for he or she has a proper self-assurance that comes from knowing that he or she belongs in a greater whole and is diminished when others are humiliated or diminished, when others are tortured or oppressed.”
It is this very sentiment that can best describe the function and ethics of the Big Issue. The Big Issue is a non-profit, job creating, non-governmental organisation (NGO) that has been launched in Cape Town. It publishes a 3-weekly general interest magazine sold by a vendor force of unemployed, homeless and socially excluded adults. This is backed up by a social development program of vendor support, vocational-, life- and business skills training, as well as guidance counseling, which aids the mostly homeless vendors, to move back into mainstream society. Critical to its job creating function, it is the The Big Issue's philosophy that actively encourages and equips vendors to 'move on' from the project and into mainstream society.
Your journalism internship abroad will take you to Cape Town where you will be granted the opportunity to be employed as a journalist at the Big Issue. This will give you the precious opportunity to gain practical journalism experience while being a part of an instrument that enables willing, unemployed and marginalized African adults, to take responsibility for their own lives through this developmental employment program.

With a fascinating history dating back over 350 years, Cape Town offers a huge selection of museums and places of cultural interest to visit. Also to be considered are tours of the townships and a ferry trip to Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was held prisoner for over 27 years. You could also visit the popular District Six Museum and learn more on the history of this fascinating area.
