Sea & Shore Engineering

Sea & Shore Projects

Position: Civil Engineer
Length of Engineering Internship: 8-12 weeks
Number of Positions: 1

This is an amazing opportunity to engage in your dreams of civil engineering. Your hard work during your engineering summer internship position will ensure you a place in history, as you build upon the hallowed ground of the FIFA 2010 soccer world cup stadium in Green Point.  Skills needed for this internship in Cape Town include a keen sense of responsibility, the ability to act as a team player and the ability to think laterally, solving problems that others cannot. If you are studying engineering or a civil degree, then this is the perfect position for you.

For all engineers who are seriously considering this outstanding internship in Cape Town, useful information regarding the construction and design of the stadium follows below:

The stadium is located in Green Point, between Signal Hill and the Atlantic Ocean. At a cost of 4.5 billion Rand and boasting a 70,000 seat capacity, the Green Point Stadium is one of the most ambitious projects ever undertaken by the City of Cape Town. Tens of thousands of workers stream through Cape Town every single day in order to complete this massive project. On the day that the FIFA officials announced that Cape Town would indeed become the sight of the FIFA semi-finals, our country exploded with elation.

The stadium is simply a triumph of modern architecture. 15, 000 seats will be allocated for modular construction, meaning that office suites will be built there once the matches themselves have been completed. The architecture centres on delivering a unique experience for the visitor once inside the stadium. The sweeping curve of the stadium’s outer rim conforms to an inverse silhouette of Table Mountain itself, so as not to block the view of our gorgeous mountain. The fibre-glass exterior is a designed to be seen as a seamless and articulated surface from the outside, with a shell curving forever around the ridged structure.

A “breathing’ inner skin [fibre-glass, cloth like membrane: EFTE] diffuses sound, reflecting it off the walls and the body of the roof, further rebounding back into the stadium itself, damping the sound to a great degree. Six principle levels of the stadium divide the following zones and areas. Your Cape Town Internship will assist in development of these sections:

•    Level zero is made up of sports team rooms, the VVIP and VIP reception, the lowest parking level, facilities for medical and police staff and waste disposal.

•    Level one is for the Media areas. This is where the TV and radio studios, the official FIFA and sports event staff offices and upper parking level will reside.

•    On level two, the public Plaza Main concourse welcomes and directs pedestrian traffic and access down to the lowest tier and up to second tier. From here, one can access the disabled person’s seating, a fan shop, the  VIP welcome zone and other concession stands.

•    Level three contains the business club, a multi-purpose hall, the security and police officers plus storage spaces for the operator’s and a smaller food kitchen for effective meal preparation.

•    When it comes to level four, you will find yourself on the upper level of business club, where the larger food preparation kitchen and stadium administration offices reside.

•    Level five is exclusively for the VIP lounges and private corporate boxes [companies usually hire these out, helps to woo potential clients].

•    Level six is the upper concourse, with concession stands leading into the third tier of seats.

Your ideal Cape Town summer internship position is waiting for you. Be part of history with this amazing opportunity.
