Shine Centre

Shine Centre Internship

Position:  Education/Tutoring

Duration of Internship:  10-12 weeks

Available Positions:  2

Are you studying or interested in a career in education?  Do you have a passion for helping people, and a willingness to work with children from underprivileged communities?  Well then you should consider an international internship with the Shine Centre, a Cape Town-based NGO that seeks to provide educational support and tutoring services to children who are struggling in low-income schools.

Education is widely considered to be the most important determinant of one’s ability to develop and succeed both socially and economically.  Yet the sad reality is that, in South Africa, most of the children living poor communities are deprived of a quality education, and thus a promising future.  Schools in South Africa, particularly those located in townships and low-income communities, lack adequate staff and resources.  Large class sizes make it nearly impossible for class teachers to cope with the individual needs of each child.  The Department of Education is unable to provide schools with adequate resources and support services when learners are failing to make progress at school.

The Shine Centre, which stands for “Support and Help in Education,” tackles the monumental challenge of reaching out to children in low-income schools and alleviating the vast inequalities that exist in South Africa’s educational system.  Founded in 2000, the Shine Centre has established programs in carefully selected schools where 99% of the children are historically or economically disadvantaged.  Their mission is to ensure that these children reach their full potential and receive adequate support in language and literacy.  Relying on a dedicated team of local staff and volunteers, the Shine Centre encourages individuals and businesses from local communities to partner with schools in providing struggling learners with weekly support lessons.  The Centre organizes weekly or bi-weekly meetings with struggling children, during which interns and volunteers provide invaluable educational and social support to the children.

As an education intern with the Shine Centre, you will work directly with children from schools to provide them with tutoring and homework support, as well as to develop their language and phonological awareness through activities such as paired reading, writing stories, and playing games.  During these sessions, you will give your learning partner your full attention, providing them time to think without a sense of urgency, and building their self-confidence.  You will also have the opportunity to help teach art classes, run a garden project, assist in the school library, and participate in the Shine Centre’s bi-weekly multi-sensory intervention program called Literacy Hour.

If you are interested in education and willing to work with children from underprivileged backgrounds, you should definitely consider an internship with the Shine Centre.  This internship will provide you with an invaluable, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to form meaningful connections with a diverse group of local staff and volunteers, and with children from low-income communities in Cape Town.  Internships form a critical part of your educational and professional experience, so go ahead and apply today!
