Summer internships such as being an HIV/Aids educator packs a double punch, not only do you provide for the needs of others, you hone your personal skills as well. You will be working at St. Anne's Shelter, which is a home for women with young children who would otherwise have landed up on the streets. As an intern, you will help the staff run product making and business skills workshops through the organization's Skills Training Programme. You will also assist in the coordination of the St. Anne's Homes HIV Project and be involved in HIV education. Summer internships as an HIV/Aids councillor will include counselling, support and shelter to infected mothers and their children. Due to the high degree of responsibility you will be given as an intern at St. Anne's, the minimum duration of this internship is twelve weeks.
About St. Anne's Homes:
The St. Anne's Homes was established in 1904 by a small group of dedicated Christian women from the Church of the Province of Southern Africa as a refuge for any woman or girl in need. Over many years St. Anne's has adapted and expanded its services to respond efficiently to the changing needs of the women and children they care for. Our HIV/Aids project seeks to care for and support those who are infected and affected by HIV/Aids. By including all, women are being empowered and enlightened on matters on HIV/Aids and they are also encouraged to get tested. An important aspect of our work is to help prepare the women for the job market. They are supported and guided in applying for jobs and thereafter a debriefing session is held to share their experiences with each other. Through weekly job-hunting skills workshops, all our women benefit from CV writing, job hunting skills, interview skills, telephonic interview skills, dress code, positive self-image and building confidence. This enables women to find suitable and sustainable employment. Your HIV Aids internship will go hand in hand with these brave women as you teach them the necessary and requisite skills which will help them to land a job, allowing them to support their family or themselves as they enter the job market.
Current programs being run at St. Anne’s Shelter include: Shelter for 17 women and their children, who would most likely end up on the streets if they had nowhere to go, as well as a stroller mom’s shelter for ten mothers who reside on the streets with their children. For women who have come through the program successfully, there is a second stage house with four to six women who have found employment; they require a little extra push before they are completely independent. Finally, counselling is provided for traumatised children in the shelter who were victims of abuse.
Use your training during the three months in your HIV Aids internship position to better the lives of women in need and provide a caring sanctuary for all.
