Genre of Internship: Marine Biology
Dates of Participation: Between March 2011 & May 2011

"Forget everything you have ever been told about Africa… This is THE ultimate experience that will virtually transform you into a new person. Stop functioning and start living: welcome to Cape Town!

My name is Caroline, I am 19 years old, I am from Belgium and I came to South Africa to improve my English at EC Cape Town. I attended a 3 months Cambridge course that turned out to be rather demanding but undeniably useful and successful. I doubtless owe this to my outstanding teachers to whom I will be eternally grateful.

Thereafter I started the most amazing internship known to mankind organized through VA Corps: two months at the Two Oceans Aquarium at the V&A Waterfront. First and foremost I wish to emphasise the beautiful environment where I have had the privilege to work in. The Waterfront is the sparkling crown of the Mother City, not only because of its wealthy atmosphere but especially because of the overwhelming nature that surrounds it. Indeed, Table Mountain greets you every morning with its protective and stunning silhouette and, caressing the foot of the mountain, the ocean embraces you with its comforting immensity.

At the Aquarium I got to know the most incredible people around, and there was not a day that I did not spend laughing from 7am to 6pm. Penguins, Culture Lab, Eco System, Cricket Lab, Corals, Quarantine, Jellies, Kitchen, Collections, Frogs ... Can’t tell how much I enjoyed going home completely exhausted, smelling like fish and thoroughly delighted about all the tasks I had achieved, the new things I had learned and discovered.  I had such a blast, I couldn’t even think of going home or it would have torn my heart and soul apart. I have never said goodbye to anyone here: ‘See you soon!’ is all I feel like saying. Cape Town got under my skin…

Was I to ever life a part of my life again then it would be my gap year, without any hesitation whatsoever. Thanks to all the amazing people who made it possible!
