Cathy Weitenbeck

Genre of Internship: Biomedical Engineering
Dates of Participation: Between May 2010 & July 2010

"Hi. I'm Cathy Weitenbeck and I'm from Milwaukee Wisconsin.  I went to school at the Milwaukee School of Engineering and graduated with B.S. degree in Biomedical Engineering just one day before I left for South Africa.  I spent 10 weeks with my internship at Disa Vascular in South Africa. Disa Vascular is a Medical Equipment Company that specializes in the development of coronary stents.  Their offices were right in Obs where I was living making it an easy 15min walk to get to work.  The company did everything in their two story complex including research and design, manufacting, quality control, sales, and shipment of their products all over the world.  I specifically worked in the research and design department. I spent time looking into percutaneous mitral valve replacement, and biodegradable stents.  It was great experience learning about how other companies around the world develop medical devices and the different issues they can encounter in other regions of the world.

I was able to meet a lot of other interns from all over the world, and spend time exploring and trying new things in South Africa.  There were great opportunities to take advantage of like caged shark diving, bungee jumping, wine tasting, and safaris.  The views were magnificent especially traveling along the Garden Route.  I met some incredible students by spending time traveling with them and learning about Cape Town.  Some of my favorite memories were simply from hanging out, getting food, and watching movies with the other interns.  Getting to know so many new people and learning about where they were from and why they came to South Africa was a great experience."

-Cathy Weitenbeck participated in a biomedical engineering internship through VACorps from May-July of 2010.
