"I'd like to thank the whole VACorps team for making this adventure-of-a-lifetime not only possible, but even more spectacular and meaningful than my wildest expectations! It's an even more difficult challenge to find a VACorps participant who didn't enjoy his/her time in Cape Town, because the support structure VACorps provided played no small part in allowing me to have peace of mind while having the time of my life!
"The biggest effect the program had on me was how it allowed me to discover more of who I was, and to fully appreciate who I could become through self-improvement. There are so many instances where I kept challenging myself to be better, but one that I want to highlight is how I took initiative at Scat to ensure I was engaged and happy with the kind of work I was doing. I could have easily laid back for the whole 2 months and not felt that my effort was valued; instead I actively sought out new responsibilities around the office to truly maximize my experience there.
"With regards to my most memorable experiences in South Africa, I honestly can't think of any experience that wasn't memorable in itself! Going for yoga several times a week; outdoor and adventure activities like hikes and shark cage diving; road trips with colleagues and roommates; being in the heat and heart of the World Cup; all assortments of braais; the nightlife in Obs and downtown; Saturday mornings at Old Biscuit Mill; chilling at home with fellow Hexagonians; seeing firsthand how poverty afflicts townships so adversely. It's difficult to choose which experiences were more memorable than the rest because I remember it all so clearly!"
