"I never could have imagined how my time in South Africa would change my life. I never could have imagined the amazing relationships I would develop. I never could have imagined the personal, professional, and individual growth I would experience.
As beneficial as a classroom might be and despite all the learning that can take place within one, there is something that you learn that cannot be taught while you live in a new country, work in the field and career you are pursuing, and absorb yourself in a new culture. Cape Town, South Africa was a place I could do this, thanks to IE3 Global Internships and VAC. I was able to work as a photojournalist for a non-profit magazine, earn credits for school, experiene the many cultures of South Africa, meet amazing people, take time to discover myself and truly experience volunteering and "adventuring!" Bungee jumping, shark cage diving, sand boarding, horseback riding were all amazing, but the best thing I left with was a strong sense of who I am as a person and who I want to be.
I don't want my own culture, country, media, career, friends or family to define me and during my time away, between all the "doing" I was able to "be." Cape Town will always be a special place to me and I'm not sure if I left my heart there or found it...
I think both.
VAC created a supportive, fun, adventurous atmosphere so I felt comfortable being in a new place and could adjust and thrive.
