"It’s a fact of VAC life, your flight here will be filled with nervousness, excitement and the thought, ‘what have I done? I am on a flight to Africa…’ What I did not realize was how significantly different my return flight would be. My internship has given me experiences that I could have never imagined. People from all over the world, who three months ago I had never even heard of, have become my family, and this foreign African city has grown to be my home.
I have never experienced a place quite like Cape Town; its people, streets and beaches are so vibrant and just begging to be explored. Whether you are a museum person or a sun lover; a wine connoisseur or a beer drinker; an adventure seeker or a café dweller there is something in this city for everyone! At any point in time, Cape Town is at your fingertips, only a mini bus (or two) away to fill your days. Spending the weekend beachside, hitting the waves on a surfboard and then closing out Sunday night in Camps Bay at “Goldfish Submerged Sundays” is what I have learned to call a perfect weekend. VAC planned adventures such as the Hermanus weekend, and extended trips throughout Africa (Garden Route) were some of my favourite experiences here. Vanessa, Sean and Oliver know how to plan for a legendary time, and I don’t know anyone who ever returned disappointed – I certainly did not!
For current and new interns, prepare yourself for everything and anything. Spontaneity becomes the name of the game in this wonderful part of the world. From cultural experiences such as Mzoli’s to hiking Lions Head on a full moon - don’t pass anything up. Time goes by very quickly here, so when in doubt, I suggest remembering that you can sleep on the plane ride home! For those that have flown off before me, thanks for the memories and I look forward to when our paths will cross again."
