The VACorps Internship Program in Cape Town, South Africa
Liz Howe
"My experience as a Volunteer Adventure Corps intern at the Cape Town Refugee Centre was incredible. During my first two weeks there I assisted with a seminar combating xenophobia, took a newly-arrived refugee to a women’s shelter, and was taken to a refugee camp to assess the conditions. If this sounds appealing to you, getting out of your comfort zone, then this is the program, and the internship, for you. I was able to speak to clients from all over Africa, hearing first-hand accounts of things I had only read about. Some of my fondest memories of my internship are from talking to the people who work at the CTRC. I looked forward to outings so that I could hear their stories and see the sights of Cape Town through their perspective. "Outside of my work day, VACorps arranged excursions to keep me busy every Friday afternoon. My favorite thing about these excursions? Most of them occurred outdoors. Whether it was hiking above Simon’s Town, working in Nyanga at the garden, or sipping wine at High Constantia, I was always able to take in how incredibly diverse and beautiful Cape Town is. "I have worked in Africa twice before but I was never able to call it home, Cape Town IS different. The scenery is spectacular, especially for the hiking enthusiasts. The people are incredibly friendly and can be some of the best friends you’ll ever make. The culture is vibrant and offers you the chance to experience life from many different perspectives. By the end of your stay you’ll feel as though there is still so much left to see, and although you may leave a little bit of your heart there, you know you’ll be back again soon. "Oh, and go to Xhosa class! Ivy will teach you some very useful phrases and how to impress people by singing ‘The Click Song.’" —Liz Howe. February, 2010.
-Liz Howe participated in a refugee work internship in Cape Town, from September to December of 2009 through the Volunteer Adventure Corps professional internship program.
