The VACorps Internship Program in Cape Town, South Africa
Liza Gilhuly
"Volunteer Adventure Corps opened my eyes and helped me progress not just intellectually but culturally as well. I was introduced to a way of life completely different from my own and was forced to adapt to an environment not within my comfort zone, which resulted in a heightened appreciation of diversity. I became more independent and mature, but at the same time the VACorps program never left me feeling alone or helpless in the bustling, exciting city of Cape Town. The various activities planned by VACorps outside of my internship helped me forge lasting connections with other interns and local South Africans. The internship that I took on at the Southern African Media and Gender Institute, which was set up through VACorps, also taught me a good deal about South African social issues and the political system. VACorps was a great support system throughout this internship and it was ensured that I received the maximum benefit from my time spent in Cape Town." —Liza Gilhuly, Amherst College. December, 2009.
