Genre of Internship: Occupational Therapy
Dates of Participation: Between September 2011 & December 2011

I had so many reservations about coming to South Africa; I was worried about the culture shock, worried I wouldn’t make friends, worried I wouldn’t settle in.. Three months later I’m returning home having gained confidence, lifelong friends, unforgettable memories, a great tan, (and about 5kg in weight!), but there’s not a single thing I’d change about my time here. VAC have provided constant and ongoing support throughout my stay here; the staff have been truly wonderful, going above and beyond their duty and taking a personal interest in every volunteer, and are always available for advice on everything from internship troubles to what the best restaurants to eat at are! My internship itself was perfectly matched to me. Working in the Occupational Therapy department at a school for the blind has completely confirmed my career choice; I’ve gained so much knowledge and experience and met some truly inspiring people. Alongside all this, living in one of the most beautiful cities in the world has been the icing on the cake; it’s got all the best attributes of a lively capital city as well as the mountains, wildlife and array of outdoor activities minutes away from the city centre. Three months is a short amount of time, far too short I’ve realized, but I’ve seen, learnt and experienced an incredible amount in that short period of time and, although I’m beyond sad to be leaving this all behind, I’m taking so much away with me.
