“When it came time for me to find an internship, I really wanted to find something unique to my program. I did an extensive Google search and found this program. Cape Town and South Africa in general have always been places that I have wanted to visit and it seemed like VACorps would be able to help me achieve both of my goals. The VACorps staff are great people and extremely easy to talk to about anything. This company provides the interns with the information and guidance that helps us to be self-sufficient, which was one of the best parts of program in my opinion.
My internship placement was with a commercial photographer and my experience with him, I would not have been able to find in the states. I was working on his assignments, but on my own time, pace and really making myself accountable for the amount of work that got done. I went on several amazing shoots and each was more exciting than the first. I think the best one was for the South African Women's Rugby Team. We used a room at the Grand Daddy Hotel on Long St. and completely tore the bar area apart and turned it into an amazing studio. The people I have met through my colleague will certainly be beneficial to my career and several ended up becoming close friends. Being able to do this internship provided me with the skills I feel I was lacking in order to further my career as a photographer. My supervisor was so easy to talk to and to ask for his help. He taught me a lot and I wish I could have worked for him longer.
I have to say that I wouldn't trade this experience for anything. I saw so many beautiful places and met so many amazing people that I can confidently say that I am not the same person going home as I was coming here. I was drawn to this city for a reason and I made the most of it. I am so excited to have made friends from all over the world and my own country because now I have a couch to crash on almost anywhere I decide to travel.”
