The VACorps Internship Program in Cape Town, South Africa
Sara Reeves“Since I was 15 years old I have known I wanted to go to Africa. Years later, with only one year of college to go, I began searching for opportunities to make my dream a reality. Searching online for the perfect opportunity was overwhelming with so many options to choose from, but when I found the VACorps website I felt I found something unique. VACorps combines the opportunity to intern in South Africa with weekly excursions, support that is there when you need it (offering an extra sense of security), and the immediate opportunity to meet new people and make new friends.
“Going to Cape Town through the VACorps program has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. Every day was an adventure; from the Food and Wine Expo to holding the trunk of an elephant along the Garden Route, I loved every minute of it. Not only was I able to experience new things in a new country and make wonderful new friends with whom I still stay in contact, but I was also able to have the incredibly unique experience of interning for a South African NGO working with refugees and asylum seekers.
“My time at the Cape Town Refugee Centre was enlightening, eye opening, and at times challenging. I was able to see refugee camps first hand, offer financial assistance to parents struggling to pay school fees, and learn about the refugee plight. In the three months that I spent in Cape Town I learned more about myself than I could ever imagine, and it will remain a time in my life that I will never forget.” Sara Reeves. Austin, Texas. June 2009.
