"When I first thought about interning in South Africa, so many what-ifs ran through my mind. I knew everything would be different than what I was used to back home. The Volunteer Adventure Corps staff immediately put me at ease. Oliver and Vanessa answered all my questions ahead of time, and I knew before I left that I would be well taken care of once I got to Cape Town. My experience here confirmed my initial impression of VAC. The VAC staff was always there to answer any questions I had about my internship, about the city, anything. My internship with the Southern African Media and Gender Institute really allowed me to grasp the intricacies of working in an NGO in South Africa, a country in such a unique position in the world in terms of human rights, politics and other social issues. This experience could not have been replicated anywhere else in the world. The connections VAC has in the Cape Town community are invaluable. Interns work in every type of organization all around the townships and the city. And you live with them. One of VAC's many strengths is the diversity you are exposed to as an intern. People from around the world with varying interests all come together as a result of VAC. Moreover, VAC offers all of its interns the change to explore Cape Town, through the Friday activities, and the whole of southern Africa, through the longer trips. I went on the Sardine Run trip, which was unbelievable. We swam with sharks and dolphins, saw traditional Xhosa villages, ate traditional meals, and experienced life in the Eastern Cape. My internship this summer was amazing and I have stories that will last a lifetime--all thanks to VAC!"
