Zach Lofton

Genre of Internship: NGO Development
Dates of Participation: Between March 2010 & July 2010

"My ten weeks in Cape Town, South Africa were invaluable! It was easily one of the greatest experiences of my life. Volunteer Adventure Corps provided me with an opportunity to do some of the most amazing things that I ever saw myself doing. VACorps provides so much more than is to be expected from an internship placement organization.

Coming to South Africa I was seeking to gain some international work experience in the nonprofit section 21 business sector. My internship site, Heart Global in Woodstock, is a social business incubator designed to create and incubate sustainable business initiatives, all the while focusing on making positive social change. While the project I worked on was not exactly what I thought it would be, I learned more than I could have hoped to learn in a traditional classroom setting. Everything about the opportunity to work on the Grow South Africa project was humbling and eye opening from a business perspective as well as a social perspective. As I was given more responsibilities I found myself feeling invested in every aspect of the project's operations and anxious to gain feedback about my undertakings.

The social environment that VACorps provides is definitely more than I was expecting. It was so interesting to live in the same house with people from so many different countries and areas of the world. Living in a house with other interns and students provides countless opportunities to socialize and also provides a wonderful support system. I have made some wonderful friends that I will have for a long time. The social environment that VACorps provides simply cannot be overestimated.

All in all, I would encourage anyone interested to take the opportunity of a lifetime and join VACorps. You will not regret it!"
