It’s a fun, practical introduction to life in South Africa that helps you feel confident, connected, and ready to make the most of your internship experience.

Orientation Schedule

Arrival Day

Our team will meet you at Cape Town International Airport and transfer you to your program housing. To make your journey smoother, we’ll connect participants who are booked on the same flights so you can travel together. After settling in, you’ll have time to rest, unpack, and start getting to know your surroundings. We’ll provide dinner for you that evening so you can relax and recharge after your travels.

Safety Briefing, Walking Tour & Signal Hill Your orientation begins with a welcome presentation and safety briefing at the VAC office. Then, enjoy a guided walking tour of Observatory, followed by lunch at a local café. In the evening, we’ll take a scenic sunset walk up Signal Hill and enjoy a packed dinner overlooking the city.

These evenings explore South Africa’s history, politics, identity, and current events through engaging talks, traditional dance performances, local guest speakers, and even food tastings. It’s a dynamic way to deepen your understanding of the country and connect with its rich cultural landscape.

Each experience is designed by our team and led by staff who join in on the fun, making it a great way to see the city, try something new, and connect with fellow interns along the way.

Weekly Meet-up Schedule

Signal Hill Sunset Picnic

Enjoy a gentle evening hike up Signal Hill, one of Cape Town’s most scenic viewpoints. The walk is easy and accessible, offering stunning views of the city, Table Mountain, and the Atlantic coastline. At the top, we’ll relax with a laid-back picnic as the sun sets over the ocean—a perfect welcome to Cape Town’s natural beauty.

Surfing in Muizenberg

Head to the laid-back surf town of Muizenberg for a fun and beginner-friendly day in the waves! Known for its long, gentle breaks and colourful beach huts, Muizenberg is the perfect place to learn how to surf or brush up on your skills. You’ll get a lesson from experienced instructors, all gear is provided, and no experience is needed—just bring your sense of adventure!

Constantia Nek Hike

Leave the city behind and take on one of Cape Town’s most scenic routes from Constantia Nek. This moderate trail winds through forested paths and into the mountains, offering a quieter alternative to the more popular Table Mountain routes. At the summit, you’ll reach a peaceful reservoir—perfect for a swim and a rest in nature. With panoramic views over the surrounding valleys and fewer crowds, it’s easy to see why this is a favourite among locals.

Sailing in Table Bay

Set out from the V&A Waterfront and experience Cape Town from the water. Sailing in Table Bay offers wide-open views of the city skyline, Table Mountain, and the Atlantic coastline. Whether it’s calm or windy, it’s a great way to see the city from a new angle and enjoy a bit of sea air.

Cape Point Hike

Cape Point is one of South Africa’s most iconic landmarks, located at the tip of the Cape Peninsula within Table Mountain National Park. Often mistaken as the southernmost point of Africa, it’s where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans famously meet. The hike up to the lighthouse offers stunning coastal views, dramatic cliffs, and a look down at the wild, untouched beaches far below. It’s a must-see spot with some of the most breathtaking scenery in the region.

Chapman’s Peak Hike

This moderately challenging trail climbs to the summit of Chapman’s Peak, offering some of the most impressive coastal views in the Cape. As you ascend, you’ll pass through fynbos-covered slopes with panoramic views over Hout Bay, Noordhoek Beach, and the famous coastal road below. It’s a solid hike with a rewarding payoff at the top. After the descent, there’s the option to stop by the Hout Bay Market for a relaxed dinner and a browse through local food stalls and crafts.

Seal Island Cruise

Join us for a scenic boat trip from Hout Bay Harbour to Duiker Island, home to a thriving colony of Cape fur seals. The cruise offers close-up views of the seals in their natural habitat, along with stunning coastal scenery, including landmarks like Chapman’s Peak and the Sentinel.

Picnic in Kirstenbosch

Spend a relaxing afternoon in the shade of Table Mountain at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden—one of the most beautiful gardens in the world. Wander through indigenous plant displays, walk along the curved canopy bridge for treetop views, and find a quiet spot on the lawn to enjoy a laid-back picnic surrounded by nature.

Final Week: Kruger Park Safari

(optional, cost not included in program fee)

End your South African adventure with a 6-day safari to the iconic Kruger National Park. This once-in-a-lifetime trip includes guided game drives, bush walks, and peaceful nights spent in nature. You’ll explore one of Africa’s top wildlife reserves and have the chance to see the Big Five up close. The trip ends in Johannesburg, so be sure to book your return flight home from Johannesburg, not Cape Town. It’s the perfect finale to your gap year experience.
