Medical internships in Zimbabwe provide a unique opportunity to observe healthcare professionals in both public and private medical facilities. This exciting internship program will give you an immersive view of the Zimbabwean healthcare system and is a rewarding experience for anyone considering a career in medicine. The program itinerary will see you traveling to urban and rural areas of the country as you survey the contrasting dynamic between private and public healthcare services in Zimbabwe. You will receive mentorship from doctors and nurses throughout your experience.

A medical Internship in Zimbabwe will give you an outstanding insight and understanding into the functioning of a developing country’s health care system. You will have first-hand access to Zimbabwe’s theatre/surgery rooms for surgical operations, doctor’s consultations with patients, and clinical rounds. You will learn how medical practitioners deliver their services in a resource constrained environment and you will benefit from cultural exchange within an extremely open and friendly community. It is not all work though.  Zimbabwe is a country of world renowned beauty and mind blowing scenery. Above all, its people are some of the friendliest on the planet. You will have the opportunity to visit tourist attractions and enjoy activities such as safari tours, bungee jumping off Victoria Falls and city tours.

Typical intern task’s roles and responsibilities

  • Observe medical doctors and taking notes during clinic
  • Assist doctors with patient filing
  • Observe physicians in theatre during surgery
  • Accompany physicians during post-operation rounds
  • Compile a research report based on your area of interest

Program Dates, Costs and Details

Program Dates:

  • This is a fixed date program that runs from the 19th June – 29th July 2020
  • Provisional dates for 2021 are 31st May – 12th July 2021

Program Cost:

  • $3500.00
  • $1590.00 for an optional excursion to Victoria Falls at the end of your stay

Included in the program cost: 

  • Placements (with exposure to Urology, Physiotherapy, Internal Medicine, Paediatrics, Pathology, Public and community health)
    • Week 1 – 3: Children’s Rehabilitation Unit & Harare Central Hospital
    • Week 4 & 5: Rural Hospital placement
    • Week 6: Victoria Falls (optional extra)
  • Shared accommodation which includes
    • Internet
    • Pool
    • Laundry
  • Meals and snacks including vegetarian and vegan dietary requirements
    • Dinner 4 nights per week
