Transport Policy
To ensure your safety while traveling in and around Cape Town during your internship with VACorps. The following guidelines outline the forms of transport you may and may not use, as well as how to assess and navigate transport options safely and responsibly.
1. Motorcycles and Similar Vehicles
For safety reasons, the following are strictly prohibited:
- Motorcycles
- Mopeds
- Motorized scooters
- Quads or ATVs
Students may not operate or ride as a passenger on these vehicles under any circumstances. This is a zero-tolerance policy, and violations may result in dismissal from the program.
2. Recreational Motorized Vehicles
Use of vehicles such as e-scooters, e-bikes, segways, hoverboards, and jet skis is not recommended. If you choose to use one:
- You do so at your own risk.
- You must ensure your travel insurance covers any injury or liability resulting from use of recreational motorized vehicles.
3. Seatbelt Safety
Seatbelts must be worn at all times when available.
If a vehicle does not have seatbelts, consider an alternative or speak with VACorps staff before proceeding.
4. Uber (Private Transport)
VACorps recommends Uber as the safest and most reliable form of private transport in Cape Town. When using Uber:
- Confirm that the driver and vehicle match the details shown in the app.
- Share your ride status with a friend or VACorps staff.
- Wait for your driver in a safe, well-lit, and public location.
5. Public Transport (Minibus Taxis, MyCiTi, Golden Arrow Buses, Trains)
Public transport can offer meaningful cultural experiences but carries increased risks. To manage these risks, the following rules apply:
Before You Ride:
- You must get prior approval from VACorps staff before using any form of public transport.
- You may not use a public transport route alone for the first time. Someone experienced with the route must accompany you on your first trip.
- Public transport is not permitted after dark.
When You Ride:
-
- Only use public transport between the southern suburbs and the Cape Town CBD:
- Motorized routes: Wynberg – Cape Town CBD
- Train route: Kalk Bay – Cape Town CBD
- Never use public transport to access townships or low-income areas.
- Only use public transport between the southern suburbs and the Cape Town CBD:
Only board if:
- The vehicle appears to be in good condition (no flat tires, broken lights, or other obvious issues).

If anything feels unsafe, do not board the vehicle. Contact VACorps staff immediately.
