Participants with strong research and writing experience may also take on a more defined independent project as the internship develops.

Politics, policy, human rights and law
These fields often overlap, particularly in organizations working on public-interest issues.
A single organization might host a policy intern researching legislation, a law intern focused on legal analysis, and a human-rights intern working more directly on outreach or rights education.
A Political Science, Public Policy or Governance placement will generally focus more closely on institutions, legislation, policy research, political systems, accountability or systemic reform.

STANDARD INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
Flexible participation within VAC’s standard internship program.
GAP YEAR INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
A fixed-date cohort program with one- or two-term options.
PROGRAM HOUSING
Private bedrooms in shared participant housing in Observatory, Cape Town. Housing is arranged separately and is not included in the VAC program fee.
UNPAID INTERNSHIPS
VAC internships are unpaid professional learning experiences rather than paid employment.
WHAT THE PROGRAM INCLUDES
Placement matching, pre-arrival preparation, orientation, airport services, weekly activities and local VAC support.
ACADEMIC CREDIT
Optional academic-credit pathways are available. Credit fees are separate, and transfer is determined by your home institution.

Yes. These placements are relevant to students across Political Science, Politics, Public Policy, International Relations, Governance, Development Studies and related social sciences.
The exact title of your degree matters less than whether your interests and skills fit the work of the host organization.
What kind of organizations could I intern with?
Placements may be developed with policy and research organizations, parliamentary-monitoring groups, governance and democracy organizations, constitutional institutions, advocacy organizations and other parts of civil society.
The exact host will depend on your interests, background and current placement availability.
What will I actually do during a political science or public policy internship?
You might research policy or legislation, contribute to reports or policy briefs, monitor parliamentary or public meetings, analyze information, prepare presentations, or support advocacy, communications and stakeholder engagement.
Your responsibilities will depend on your skills and the host’s current work.
Will I work with Parliament or government?
Some placements involve parliamentary monitoring or organizations that engage closely with public institutions and policy processes.
That does not mean every Political Science or Public Policy intern will work directly within government or Parliament. The experience depends on the particular placement.
Are these internships mainly research-based?
Many are research-heavy, particularly public policy, governance and institutional placements.

How are Political Science, Public Policy, Human Rights and Law internships different?
Political Science, Public Policy and Governance placements generally focus on institutions, policy research, legislation, political systems, accountability or systemic reform.
Law internships are primarily legal, while Human Rights & Community Advocacy placements tend to involve more community-facing advocacy, rights education, participation or outreach.
There can be significant overlap. VAC looks at the participant’s actual responsibilities when developing the placement.
Can gap year participants apply?
Yes, where an appropriate role is available.
Strong gap year participants with an interest in politics, current affairs, international relations, research or communications may be suitable for introductory roles. More advanced research placements may require stronger academic preparation.
Can I receive university credit?
If your university requires an internship or has specific academic requirements, send VAC those requirements before the placement process begins so the placements team can explore whether an appropriate organization can accommodate them.
VAC also offers optional academic-credit pathways. Your home university makes the final decision about how outside credit is recognized or transferred.
