The VAC Gap Year Experience | 2026

This video highlights the Aerospace Program in Cape Town, a faculty-led international experience from the The Grainger College of Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in partnership with VACorps.

Led by UIUC professors Laura Ann Gerhold and Matt Hausman, the program brought students to Cape Town for an immersive academic experience focused on aerospace, engineering, and global innovation.

Through site visits, discussions, and hands-on learning, students engaged with real-world perspectives on aerospace systems, emerging technologies, and the broader role of engineering in a rapidly changing world. Experiencing these topics in an international setting provided valuable context for how engineering challenges and opportunities extend beyond the classroom.

Programs like this highlight the impact of global, place-based learning, combining academic insight with cultural experience to broaden students’ perspectives and prepare them for careers in engineering and technology.
