The California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) International Environmental Sustainability Program spent four weeks in Cape Town, South Africa, engaging in a service learning experience focused on urban gardening and environmental sustainability. Students worked in various community gardens throughout the city, collaborating with local communities to promote food security, sustainable agricultural practices, and environmental resilience. Their work included planting and maintaining vegetable and herb gardens, improving garden infrastructure like raised beds and irrigation systems, and conducting workshops on sustainable farming, composting, and soil health.

This immersive program allowed students to directly contribute to grassroots environmental initiatives while gaining practical skills and cross-cultural insights. By working alongside local gardeners and community leaders, students gained a deeper understanding of Cape Town’s urban agriculture efforts and how they address broader social and environmental issues, such as food insecurity, climate change, and biodiversity preservation. The experience not only enhanced students’ environmental knowledge but also fostered global awareness and strengthened their ability to collaborate across cultures in addressing environmental challenges.
