GAP Year Internship Program

A gap year internship program combines professional work experience, cultural immersion, and structured personal growth during a break before university or full-time study. Participants gain hands-on experience in fields like healthcare, business, sustainability, media, and human rights while developing independence and career clarity.

Yes. No previous internship or professional experience is required to participate in the program. Internship placements are tailored to each participant’s interests, goals, background, and skill level. Many participants are entering a professional environment for the first time, and VACorps provides guidance and support throughout the placement process.

Cape Town offers a unique combination of professional opportunities, cultural diversity, outdoor adventure, and affordability for international students. As an English-speaking city with a strong nonprofit and entrepreneurial sector, Cape Town provides meaningful internship experiences across fields such as healthcare, sustainability, business, media, education, and human rights. Participants also benefit from living in one of the world’s most naturally beautiful and culturally dynamic cities while developing global perspective and independence.

VACorps places a strong emphasis on participant safety and support throughout the program. Students receive airport pickup, orientation, housing support, local guidance, and access to on-the-ground staff throughout their stay in Cape Town. Participants live in shared student housing alongside other program participants, and the program includes structured activities, cultural orientation, and ongoing support. VACorps is also accredited by the Gap Year Association, an organization that evaluates programs based on health, safety, ethics, and best practices.

This program is designed for recent high school graduates, pre-college students, deferred university students, and young adults seeking meaningful international experience before beginning higher education or a professional career. It is particularly well-suited for students interested in career exploration, personal growth, cultural immersion, and gaining real-world experience through internships abroad.

Participants live in single rooms in shared student housing in Cape Town alongside other VACorps participants. Housing is located in neighborhoods with access to restaurants, cafes, grocery stores, gyms, and public transportation. The shared housing model helps students build community, develop independence, and experience daily life in Cape Town while still benefiting from program support and oversight.

The program also provides extensive local support, cohort-based housing, cultural programming, and on-the-ground staff in Cape Town. VACorps is accredited by the Gap Year Association and has worked with international students and young adults in South Africa for nearly two decades.
