Money Options in South Africa

South Africa boasts a well-established financial system with an extensive network of banks, offering various options for managing your finances while traveling. Here are some key considerations:

1. Card Payments:
  1. Foreign credit and debit cards, particularly MasterCard and Visa, are widely accepted. Debit and cheque cards linked to your home country bank account can be used both over the counter and at ATMs displaying MasterCard or Visa signs.
  2. Travel money cards or exchanging cash for South African Rands are additional options if you do not have access to banks affiliated with visa or Mastercard
2. Bringing Cash From Home
  1. During your daily life in Cape Town, the demand for cash is quite limited due to the widespread acceptance of card and digital payment methods.
  2. However, we recommend carrying approximately $1000 in cash to serve as a safety net for unexpected situations, such as losing your wallet.
  3. It is also possible to pay for trips and excursions in Dollars and Euro’s
  4. There are currency exchange options at the airport and at major shopping centers, but not in Observatory.
  5. As an additional service, we are able to change smaller amounts at the VACorps office but you will need to let us know beforehand.
3. Unlocking Your Bank Card:
  • Prior to departure, it’s crucial to contact your bank and inform them of your travel plans.
  • Be sure to specify the countries you intend to visit and the duration of your trip to prevent your overseas transactions from being flagged as fraudulent and your cards canceled.
4. Using ATMs:
  • ATMs are a convenient way to obtain cash in South Africa. Keep in mind that ATM withdrawal fees are typically comprised of multiple components.
  • You’ll likely be charged a withdrawal fee by your home bank and the local South African bank whose ATM you use. Additionally, an exchange rate conversion fee may apply.
  • To minimize fees, consider withdrawing larger amounts, as the withdrawal fees remain fixed, regardless of the amount drawn.
5. Cash Back at Grocery Stores:
  • You can also obtain cash by using the “cash back” facility at local grocery stores. While this incurs an exchange rate conversion fee, it eliminates the withdrawal fees associated with ATMs.
  • There are a number of stores in Observatory that offer this service.
6. Card Payments at Establishments:
  • Credit, debit cards and virtual cards are widely accepted at most establishments, making them a convenient option to minimize the need for carrying large sums of cash.
7. Tipping in South Africa:
  • As in America, tipping is customary and important in South Africa. Many service industry workers rely on tips for a significant portion of their income.
  • A standard practice is to add 10% to your bill. If you receive exceptional service, consider a 15% – 20% tip
