Private Transport (Uber)

Private transport is typically the safest, most convenient, and quickest way to get around Cape Town. Uber is widely available throughout the city and has become an extremely popular means of transport for both locals and visitors. Many interns use Uber for their daily commutes to work, and it is also the preferred method for getting around the city in the evenings and on weekends.

Reasons to use Uber

  1. Convenience: Uber offers a hassle-free way to get around Cape Town. You can request a ride with a few taps on your smartphone, and drivers usually arrive promptly.
  2. Safety: Uber drivers are registered and tracked, providing an added layer of safety compared to some other transportation options. You can share your trip details with friends or family for added security.
  3. Affordability: Uber is often more cost-effective than traditional taxi services, . You’ll get upfront pricing, and there are no hidden fees or haggling over fares. Uber in South Africa is far more affordable than in other developed countries such as America, the UK or Europe.
  4. Cashless Payment: You can link your credit card to your Uber account (be sure to do this before your departure) , making it a cashless transaction.
  5. Quality Service: Cape Town’s Uber drivers are typically friendly, polite and lovely to chat to. Clean and well-maintained vehicles are the norm.
  6. Availability: Uber is readily available in and around Cape Town, so you can easily find a ride, even during peak times.
  7. Local Knowledge: Uber drivers often have a good knowledge of the area and can provide trusted recommendations if prompted.

Considerations when using Uber

  1. Internet Access: Uber relies on a smartphone app, so you need a working data connection to request a ride. This can be a concern if you’re in an area with no WiFi, poor reception or have run out of mobile Data.
  2. Surge Pricing: During high-demand times, Uber may implement surge pricing, which can significantly increase the cost of your ride. Be aware of this and consider alternatives during peak hours.
  3. Traffic: Cape Town can have heavy traffic, especially during rush hours, which may affect the duration and cost of your ride.
  4. Safety Concerns: While Uber is generally safe, it’s important to wait inside until your Uber driver arrives, and verify the driver’s identity and the vehicle before getting in.
  5. Destination Accessibility: In some remote or less-visited areas, Uber availability may be limited. Confirm that you can get an Uber ride back to your location, especially if it’s off the beaten path.
