Observatory – The Home of the VACorps Program

Observatory, affectionately known as “Obs”, is one of Cape Town’s most vibrant and eclectic suburbs, located just a few kilometers from the city center. It’s the heart of the VACorps program, and for good reason: Obs is a true student neighborhood, buzzing with energy, diversity, and opportunity for connection.

A Student Hub
Obs is home to a large population of South African and international students, thanks to its proximity to the University of Cape Town and several other colleges. This makes it a natural fit for VACorps interns — you’ll be living among peers who are also studying, working, and exploring the city. When you step out your front door, you’re surrounded by young people navigating a similar stage of life.

Inclusive & Diverse
The neighborhood has long been known for its cultural mix and open-minded spirit. Students, artists, activists, and families from all backgrounds live side by side here. The result is a community that feels welcoming and inclusive, where newcomers quickly feel at home.

Vibrant Everyday Life
Lower Main Road — the beating heart of Obs — is lined with cafés, quirky shops, and restaurants serving everything from traditional South African dishes to global cuisine. Street art, live music, and markets spill into the sidewalks, creating a lively backdrop to daily life.

Nightlife & Social Life
Obs has one of Cape Town’s most active social scenes, with plenty of student-friendly cafés, bars, and music venues. There’s always something happening — from open mic nights to DJ sets — and this nightlife naturally draws both local students and international visitors together.

Built-In Opportunities to Meet Locals
Because of its unique student character, VACorps participants don’t just “live in Cape Town” — they live in a neighborhood where local and international students cross paths daily. Whether grabbing coffee at a corner café, joining a local gym or yoga class, or heading out on a Friday night, our interns find it easy to meet and form friendships with South African peers.

Community Spirit & Safety
Obs is also known for its engaged and proactive community. Local residents collaborate on social, cultural, and environmental initiatives, and the suburb has one of Cape Town’s most highly regarded privately funded public safety patrols. This includes a trusted nighttime “walk-home” service that students often use.
