Program Housing

We have a long standing partnership with a local housing provider, Rent-a-Room, which provides a variety of fully-furnished accommodation options in the vibrant neighborhood of Observatory. Accommodation costs are not included in your program fee, and making use of our program housing is highly recommended, but not compulsory.
Welcome to the VACorps Neighborhood: Observatory (Obs)
Rent-a-Room program housing is nestled within the heart of Observatory, affectionately known as “Obs” by locals. This dynamic neighborhood, situated on the periphery of Cape Town City Centre is renowned for its eclectic mix of artsy thrift stores, bookshops, galleries, and a range of outstanding dining options, all within convenient walking distance of program housing. The neighborhood’s unique charm and accessibility have made it a hub for both local and international students, many of whom attend the University of Cape Town or participate in international internships and programs.
Reasons VACorps recommends making use of program housing:
  1. The VACorps Program is based in Observatory: The VACorps offices are within walking distance of all program housing. Many of our staff members also live in Observatory.
  2. Social Environment: Rent-a-Room offers a fun and social living environment, where you’ll reside with fellow program participants eager to explore Cape Town and its vibrant culture.
  3. Back-up Power Systems: All houses are fitted with batteries and inverters which is convenient during load shedding.
  4. Close proximity to all amenities: All program housing is conveniently located in close proximity to grocery stores, restaurants, cafe’s, public transportation, doctors, pharmacies, clothing shops etc.
  5. No Curfews: There are no curfews or strict house rules, allowing you the freedom to experience the city on your terms.
  6. Flexible Booking: Rent-a-Room provides flexible booking options.
  7. Daily Cleaning Service: Enjoy the convenience of a daily cleaning service for communal areas.
  8. Private Rooms: You’ll have your own room within a shared house at an affordable daily rate.
  9. Host Cancellation Protection: There is no possibility of host cancellation.
About the Rent-a-Room Service
Rent-a-Room offers private rooms within shared houses, primarily catering to students and interns with stays ranging from 1 to 6 months. All accommodations come fully furnished, equipped with a communal fully-equipped kitchen, washing machines and dryers, WIFI, back-up power systems, and TV’s . Bedding, linen, towels and blankets are provided.  For your peace of mind, all rooms are lockable, and you’ll receive your own key.
