WHY CAPE TOWN?

Explore sustainability in a city of complex environmental and social systems

Cape Town offers a particularly relevant setting for studying sustainability because environmental issues here are closely connected to questions of water, food, land, infrastructure, development, livelihoods, and access to resources.

A Sustainability internship can therefore expose you to more than one dimension of the field. Depending on the placement, you may see how research, environmental programs, community initiatives, policy, practical projects, and organizational strategy all contribute to more sustainable systems.

Some roles are primarily desk-based and analytical. Others combine research with community engagement, field activity, practical interventions, education, or program support.

WHAT YOU MAY EXPERIENCE

Explore different sides of sustainability

Sustainability Research & Consulting

Support environmental or social research, sustainability analysis, technical or scientific writing, environmental consulting, or work linked to social and environmental change.

Food Security & Urban Agriculture

Gain exposure to practical sustainability through gardens, agricultural projects, food systems, produce distribution, community education, or the operational side of organizations working with food security and sustainable livelihoods.

Climate & Environmental Programs

Work may involve climate-related research, environmental governance, community programs, climate advocacy, environmental communications, or broader sustainability initiatives.

Environmental & Climate Justice

Explore how environmental issues connect with access to land, water, food, natural resources, livelihoods, inequality, and development. Depending on the host, this may include participatory research, advocacy, social safeguards, or community-led programs.

WHAT YOU MAY DO

Contribute to real sustainability work

Your responsibilities will depend on the host organization, your background, and the type of sustainability work involved.

Research & Analyze

You may assist with environmental or social research, data gathering, literature reviews, technical writing, sustainability analysis, or research supporting current programs.

Support Programs & Communication

You may help with program coordination, environmental education, communications, stakeholder or community engagement, reports, events, or practical organizational support.

Contribute to Practical Sustainability Work

In more hands-on placements, you may assist with gardens, planting, maintenance, produce handling, packing, distribution, records, administration, customer communication, or other work needed to keep a practical sustainability project operating.

WHAT YOU BRING

Sustainability can look very different from one placement to another

This is a broad field, so the type of experience available depends significantly on your interests, academic background, practical skills, and the kind of work you want to explore.

Starting Out

Participants who are newer to the field can often gain valuable experience through practical sustainability projects, community-based programs, environmental education, food-security initiatives, program support, or general research and administration.

Building Academic & Practical Experience

University students may be able to contribute to sustainability research, environmental analysis, communications, project support, community engagement, or more structured program work.

Advanced or Specialist Preparation

Participants with stronger technical or academic backgrounds may be considered for more specialized work involving climate policy, environmental economics, GIS, water, environmental data, climate-risk analysis, or related research where current host needs align with their preparation. These more specialized opportunities depend on your preparation and the host’s current work.

Sustainability or Conservation?

Sustainability and Conservation can overlap, but the main focus of the internship usually determines the better fit.

A Sustainability placement is generally the stronger match when your work centers on sustainable development, climate, food systems, environmental programs, community sustainability, environmental governance, social and environmental research, or practical systems change.

Conservation may be the stronger fit when the work centers primarily on species, habitats, biodiversity, ecological monitoring, wildlife, marine conservation, or habitat management.

Some organizations work across both areas. VAC classifies the internship according to the work you will actually be doing and what you are seeking to learn.

WHO THIS IS FOR

Sustainability experience at different stages

Gap Year Participants

Sustainability can be a strong option for motivated Gap Year participants, particularly in practical, community-based, food-security, urban-agriculture, environmental-education, or general program-support roles.

University Students

Students in environmental science, sustainability, geography, international development, environmental studies, economics, policy, agriculture, social sciences, business, or related fields can build practical experience alongside their academic studies.

Graduates & Postgraduates

More advanced candidates may be suitable for deeper research, environmental policy, climate analysis, environmental economics, GIS, water, technical writing, climate-risk work, or other specialist sustainability assignments where their background matches the host’s needs.
