LIFE IN AN EXTRAORDINARY CITY

Life in Cape Town

There’s something special about making Cape Town your home, even if it’s only for a few weeks. The mountains and coastline may capture your attention first, but it’s the people you meet, the different perspectives you encounter, and the everyday experiences that make living here so memorable.

Extraordinary Nature on Your Doorstep

Table Mountain National Park sits right in the heart of Cape Town, just a short drive from Observatory. With mountains, forests, beaches, and spectacular coastal scenery so accessible, the opportunities to explore are endless. Best of all, many of Cape Town’s most memorable outdoor experiences are free.

A City of Cultures, History, and Contrasts

Cape Town brings together a remarkable diversity of cultures, languages, and perspectives. South Africa’s fascinating and complex history is woven into everyday life, and living here offers countless opportunities to learn from local people and discover different ways of seeing the world. Some of the best moments happen unexpectedly: a conversation with your Uber driver, meeting local students, or discovering your favorite neighborhood café. As you settle in, you’ll develop your own routines, friendships, and connections with the city.

Standard Internship Program Frequently Asked Questions

How long can I join the VAC Internship Program?
The Standard Internship Program is generally 4–12 weeks. Longer participation may be possible depending on program and placement availability.
How are internships arranged?
We learn about your interests and background, then explore suitable opportunities with local hosts. A particular organization or role cannot be guaranteed.
Can I choose my own arrival date?

Yes! VAC offers flexible arrival dates, so you can plan your internship around your own schedule. However, we recommend arriving on one of our suggested dates whenever possible. This allows you to take part in orientation alongside other new participants, meet people who are also settling into Cape Town, and start building friendships from your first days.

Our suggested arrival dates are not mandatory, and you can discuss alternative dates with our team.

Do I need previous internship experience?
Not always. Some placements can suit participants exploring a field for the first time; others require more experience. Host requirements and your background determine what is suitable.
Are the internships paid?
No. Internships arranged through VAC are unpaid. The VAC program fee covers placement and participant-program services.
Is accommodation included in the program fee?
No. Housing is arranged and paid for separately. VAC can help you explore private-bedroom options in shared properties, subject to availability.
How does VAC help participants manage safety in Cape Town?
VAC provides practical orientation on transportation, personal safety, and daily life. Our local team is available during your stay, including urgent after-hours support. We encourage participants to develop the judgment needed to navigate Cape Town independently.
Can I earn academic credit?
Potentially. Academic credit arrangements depend on the pathway, eligibility, and acceptance by your home institution. Additional fees may apply; ask VAC about current options.
Will I meet other VAC participants?
Yes. Orientation, regular activities, and program housing provide opportunities to connect. Participants may arrive on different dates and stay for different lengths of time.
Will I have time to explore Cape Town outside my internship?
Yes. You will have time outside your internship and VAC activities to explore. The exact schedule depends on your placement.
What happens after I apply?
Our team reviews your interests, background, and goals, then explains the enrollment and placement-development process if the program appears suitable.
