Julia DiLuca
2025
Julia is studying Psychology at the University of Windsor. She joined the VAC Program in September 2025 and completed an Occupational Therapy internship at a public community health center.
The VAC program opened my eyes to a new way of life. Living in South Africa has been such a blessing, and I am incredibly grateful for the experience. Throughout my time in Cape Town, I felt endlessly supported by the VAC team. I was able to embrace my adventurous side and explore an entirely new city, while also having the structure and stability of an internship that gave me direct experience in my field of study.
I came into my internship at Retreat Hospital with the main goal of gaining experience in occupational therapy before starting graduate school. I loved being able to work alongside a qualified occupational therapist, follow her daily schedule and see what the profession looks like in a very different working environment. I especially enjoyed the hands-on pediatric activities and the opportunity to work alongside children. It gave me valuable experience in my field and a new perspective that I will carry with me into graduate school.
The environment can feel overwhelming at first and there may be some culture shock, but that became an important part of the learning experience for me. My advice to future interns would be to arrive ready and eager to learn, remain adaptable and try not to take things personally when the working environment is different from what you are used to. Be open to learning from the people around you and from the experience itself.
Outside of my internship, some of my favorite memories came from simply experiencing Cape Town. Swimming in the ocean for one of the first times was incredibly special. I loved exploring the beaches, and I will definitely miss the ocean, the mountains, the sunshine and the palm trees.
VAC set the foundation for such a special six weeks and for memories that will stay with me for a lifetime. I feel incredibly lucky to have had these opportunities, and I would not change anything about my experience. I have learned and grown so much during my time here, and I now feel ready for the next chapter of my life and wherever it takes me.
