I chose to come to Cape Town on a whim. I had heard it was beautiful, but I didn’t know much else about it. From the moment I arrived, I fell in love with Cape Town and South Africa. The culture, the friendliness of the people, the breathtaking beauty, and the sense of belonging it gave me during my three months there were unforgettable. Being in such an incredible place while doing the work I’m passionate about was a gift I’ll always cherish.
My time at Akeso Mental Health Clinic was deeply rewarding. I loved my site and coworkers, and I felt that the work I was doing was meaningful. This experience solidified my career aspirations and taught me so much about becoming a therapist and psychologist. Sitting in on group therapy sessions provided valuable insights into group dynamics and the role therapists play in fostering those spaces. I enjoyed observing the therapists and practicing the skills I saw them use when interacting with patients—it was an enriching, hands-on learning experience.
The VAC staff played a huge part in making my time in Cape Town so special. Their attentiveness and support were constant; I always felt reassured knowing Kus and Kholi were just a phone call away. I’m so grateful to them and the entire VAC team for their incredible hospitality and care.
