Travel Registration Programs (Optional but Recommended)

Many countries offer optional traveler registration services that allow their embassies to share updates and contact citizens abroad if needed. These programs are widely used by international travelers as a general best practice when visiting another country. While not required, participants may find them helpful for receiving official information or assistance in the event of an unexpected situation.

If you’d like to register, here are examples of programs offered by various governments:

  • United States: Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP)

  • Canada: Registration of Canadians Abroad (ROCA)

  • United Kingdom: FCDO travel alerts (email subscription service)

  • China: Consular Protection Registration

  • France: Ariane – Ministère de l’Europe et des Affaires étrangères

  • Germany: ELEFAND (Elektronische Erfassung von Deutschen im Ausland)

  • The Netherlands: Ministry of Foreign Affairs “Information Service” & Crisis Registration

  • Switzerland: Itineris – FDFA Travel Registration

Participants from other countries may check their foreign ministry’s website for similar services. Registration is optional and simply provides an additional communication channel should it be needed.
