“My experience with VAC has been nothing less than amazing. Living and working within the city of Cape Town has been an eye-opener in so many ways. Cape Town is a city like none other – the diversity of the people, the culture, the art, the views, the beaches, the food, the music, the struggle, and the triumph. I wouldn’t change my time in Cape Town for anything and if I could reverse time and go back three months to my first day in Cape Town, I would.
During my time in Cape Town, I was interning at G7 Renewable Energies. My job was to build a financial model for a five MW wind turbine project. I am very lucky to have had the opportunity to work hand in hand with wind farm developers; it’s very unlikely that I could have had the same internship back in the United States. Working with G7 was challenging, and also extremely rewarding. After three months of interning, I have solidified my interest in pursuing a career in the Energy Industry.
My first week in Cape Town, I was fortunate enough to sit down one on one with a group of teenagers from both Joe Slovo Township and Mitchells Plain Township. These young men explained in depth to me their day-to-day lives. After that conversation, I found myself feeling guilty whenever I complained, as these young men have had a harder life than anyone I’ve ever met and they are still smiling.
When I first found out that I was going to live with 16 other people in one house, I was mildly concerned. After about an hour of living at 197 Lower Main, I realized that living with 16 other interns and students was one of the better perks of coming to Cape Town. I met some of the most hysterical, intelligent, kind and adventurous people. Not only do I get to have these memories with these awesome people forever, but I’ve built such strong connections with people across the United States and globally that I almost have a friend in every corner of the world.
In conclusion, coming to VAC was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Easily the best time I’ve had in college thus far. The experience I gained professionally will benefit me in my future search for employment. The VAC escapades are unforgettable. My only regret is that I didn’t have enough time.”
