Ally participated in a social work internship in Cape Town with VACorps in 2016.
“One moment that I will never forget is going on the Garden Route with some great friends. It was great to be able to take some time off work and explore some of the most beautiful cities in South Africa. During the trip, I was able to experience shark cage diving, sand boarding, a safari, and canyoning, in addition to making lifelong friends.
“I really loved all of the beautiful scenery in Cape Town. The weather was always perfect, and waking up to the sight of Table Mountain never got old. The most important thing that you can do is come to Cape Town with an open mind. Expect the unexpected; be ready to try new foods, meet new people, and eat new foods.
“Be ready to voice your opinion. The internship is what you make it, and you need to speak up if you feel like you feel bored or want to work on different projects.
“I would recommend VACorps to other students because it allowed me to gain professional experience through a customized internship, while being exposed to an entirely new culture, making countless memories, and meeting so many great people from all around the world. With the assistance of VACorps, I have had countless once-in-a-lifetime experiences that I will remember for the rest of my life. Throughout my three months in South Africa, I have grown personally and professionally in ways that I could never have imagined.”
