I could not have asked for a better experience abroad than the time I had in Cape Town. The day I left, I was nervous that I had made the wrong choice. Within a week of starting at my site, Baphumelele Children’s Home in Khayelitsha, I knew I was exactly where I belonged. Working with the social workers, caregivers, and children was a humbling learning experience that I will keep with me forever. Having the chance to intern in a township and see what Cape Town is like outside the tourist destinations on postcards was eye opening. Along with that, I had the chance to explore so many parts of this beautiful city. I have jokingly referred to my 10 weeks here as “the summer of conquering fears” and I am so happy I had the chance to do so. Road tripping down the Garden Route with my friends to bungee jump, hike, and play with elephants will forever be one of my favorite weekends. I am so grateful for everyone from VAC for being nothing but kind and helpful throughout this whole process.
I am leaving Cape Town feeling inspired and with memories and friends that will last a lifetime.
