Brendan participated in a custom internship in healthcare administration in Cape Town with VACorps in 2018. “I am not one to make decisions without doing my research first. I knew I wanted to do an internship abroad so I started to look at different internships abroad. All the internships that I first looked at were based in Europe and had pretty big price tag attached to it. I knew I wanted to do an internship along the path of healthcare management or HIV research. South Africa was a country I had previously looked at when I was writing research papers for school so I googled internships in South Africa. VACorps popped up as a search result so I clicked on it. I can honestly say I haven’t looked back since. Pre-arrival, I was placed at an internship site and given an advisor in which I communicated through. I knew what I wanted before I came to South Africa and I wasn’t let down with what I received. This experience broadened my view on healthcare systems in other countries and the realities that are faced in those specific systems. The individuals at the hospital I worked at were charismatic and responsible, which are great qualities to have in a nurse or healthcare provider. I look forward to sharing the information I gained from this adventure and hopefully help others in my own country. I will always remember the friends I made in Cape Town through this program and the impact they had on my life.”
