“The highlight of my Cape Town OT internship was the opportunity to learn from South African occupational therapists, as well as work independently with my own patients. The VACorps program gives you the opportunity to work with many different patients with varying disabilities, so you will understand how to help them and how different activities help improve their functioning. For any future OT interns participating in the program, I would recommend that you enjoy every minute of your time at your internship because it goes by far too quickly! Also, remember that you truly get out whatever you put into your internship, so put your heart into making a difference in these wonderful people’s lives.

“My co-workers were so welcoming and taught me so much about caring for others in a professional OT setting. I could not imagine my time here without them. Prior to arrival, I was very nervous about working with patients from a different country and culture but as my internship progressed, I got to know the residents and see their amazing abilities and how all of the staff there loved and improved the lives of their patients. They always created a lively environment that made you feel welcome and at home.

“I initially chose Cape Town as the place to intern abroad because I have always wanted to travel to Africa and this was the perfect opportunity to realize this dream. I really loved living in Cape Town, specifically the charming neighborhood of Observatory. There is so much to do in the area and my house was very centrally located. There is no other way to say it than to admit that Cape Town has stolen my heart. The people are wonderful and the amazing views have given me so many opportunities to explore the landscape. I would, without hesitation, recommend VACorps to other interns!”
