“I chose to study abroad in Cape Town because I knew there was so much to learn about the culture, government, and medicine. I only stayed for five weeks, but I was able to do just that! I picked up on some South African slang, learned to call the nurses “sister” and always cheered when load shedding ended. I was able to do so many things during my time in cape town- surfing, hiking Lion’s head, kayaking, wine tasting, going on a safari, and bungee jumping. The thing I will miss the most about Cape Town is how accessible these activities are. As I leave the city, I am the most thankful for the people I have met. Five weeks may have been long enough to accomplish everything on my bucket list, but it certainly isn’t long enough with my new friends. If I could offer a few pieces of advice to new interns, I would say put yourself out there and talk to the locals, bring warm clothes if you are coming in June/July, and Carpe Diem.”
