Staying Connected: The Latest Updates from VAC in South Africa

Hello VAC Friends and Partners,

Warm greetings from sunny South Africa! As we move through the first quarter of 2025, we’re excited to relaunch the VAC newsletter and reconnect with our global community. The content will help us “stay connected” with you by sharing our latest newsworthy program developments. Moving forward, we’ll share quarterly newsletter updates.

This year marks VAC’s 18th anniversary, and while our program has evolved, one thing remains constant—the adventurous, open-minded spirit of our participants. We’re excited to keep fostering learning, global connections, and meaningful experiences in the months ahead.

Best wishes from the Fairest Cape,

The VAC Team

FORUM CIGL Conference in Athens, Greece: The Takeaways from our attendance

Sean and Oliver attended the FORUM CIGL conference in Athens, Greece in October of 2024. The conference had a wonderful atmosphere (the location wasn’t too shabby, either!) and it was great to reconnect with old friends and make new ones too.

Career readiness was the underlying theme and focus of the CIGL. International internships deliver impactful learning experiences but remain a challenge for many US colleges to accredit. Delegates at the conference shared an attitude of “how can we make this happen” and we enjoyed some very productive meetings with institutions considering future programming in South Africa.

Programs located in non-traditional destinations like South Africa have to work so much harder to capture the attention of prospective participants. In the 2022-2023 academic year, approximately 3.3% of U.S. students studying abroad chose destinations in Africa. Globally, only 6% of study abroad students participated in internship and work exchange programs. This places VAC firmly in a niche within a niche but with more universities educating students on the benefits of studying abroad in Africa, we anticipate enrollment will continue to rise in the years ahead.

Africa’s rapid population growth and its increasing role in the global economy highlight the importance of fostering international engagement. By 2050, the continent will host a quarter of the world’s working-age population and one-third of its youth, positioning it as a central driver of innovation and sustainable development. South Africa, in particular, offers unique opportunities for students to engage with pressing global challenges such as urbanization, public health, and environmental sustainability while benefiting from a dynamic educational and cultural environment.

A new study abroad & internship semester program has launched in February with UCT and UIUC

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), the University of Cape Town and VAC have designed a new hybrid semester study abroad and internship program and the inaugural cohort arrived in South Africa on February 2nd. Students enroll in two classes at the University of Cape Town for the Winter/Spring academic semester and will also participate in an internship that runs concurrently with their studies. The internship will be scheduled for approximately 15-20 hours per week for the duration of the semester.

This program offers a unique blend of academic learning at the most prestigious university in Africa and practical work experience through internships, allowing students to immerse themselves in South African culture while gaining both academic and professional skills.

Program Highlights

  • Academic Semester at the University of Cape Town (Feb–June): Optional internship after the semester (June–July) rather than concurrently with studies during the semester.

  • Custom Internship Aligned with Academic Interests: Popular categories include human rights, political science, journalism & media, public health & pre-med, social work, and education.

  • Weekly Seminar Participation: Students reflect on their internship learning and work toward completing a capstone-style project, which is presented at the end of the semester.

  • Monday Cultural Workshops and Friday Excursions: Offered weekly by VAC.

  • Student Housing: Participants live in single rooms within shared houses with other program participants.

Program Dates: February 2nd – June 28th, 2025

This program launch was only made possible thanks to the incredible efforts of Ali Freter, who is the Study Abroad Director at UIUC ACES, and Professor Jan Brooks from the UIUC College of ACES.

Faculty-Led Program Reflections

These videos showcase the experiences of two faculty-led programs hosted by VAC in 2024. Last year, we welcomed a total of eight programs, and designing custom experiences for our academic partners remains one of our favorite parts of what we do. We are starting to plan 2026 faculty-led programs for our academic partners, so please don’t hesitate to contact us if you’d like to consider sending students to Cape Town in the future.

Albany State University

In June, VAC students and faculty from Albany State University on a culturally immersive summer trip to Cape Town. The trip’s theme was “Social Work, Criminal Justice, and Music in Cape Town, South Africa.” This video documents the group’s experience.

Many thanks to Annalease Gibson, Ph.D, MSW and Wanga Sumaili for working so hard to make this trip a great success.

California State University, Long Beach

In July, The California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) International Environmental Sustainability Program spent four weeks in Cape Town, South Africa, engaging in a service learning experience focused on urban gardening and environmental sustainability. Students worked in various community gardens throughout the city, collaborating with local communities to promote food security, sustainable agricultural practices, and environmental resilience. Their work included planting and maintaining vegetable and herb gardens, improving garden infrastructure like raised beds and irrigation systems, and conducting workshops on sustainable farming, composting, and soil health.

This immersive program allowed students to directly contribute to grassroots environmental initiatives while gaining practical skills and cross-cultural insights. By working alongside local gardeners and community leaders, students gained a deeper understanding of Cape Town’s urban agriculture efforts and how they address broader social and environmental issues, such as food insecurity, climate change, and biodiversity preservation. The experience not only enhanced students’ environmental knowledge but also fostered global awareness and strengthened their ability to collaborate across cultures in addressing environmental challenges.

Thanks to Monica Argrandona for your great leadership. You were a pleasure to host!

Honorary Guests in Cape Town!

In September, we hosted Dr. Jose A. Sainz for a site visit. Jose is the Director of the Center for International Education at the University of Mary Washington and a wonderful ambassador of his institution.

During his visit, we visited several internship sites and also toured program housing to better understand how the VAC supports students in Cape Town. We are in conversations about prospective programming sometime in 2026. Jose, we look forward to future collaboration!

In November, we hosted Katherine Stievater from Gap Year Solutions in Cape Town. Katherine, a GYA Accredited Gap Year Consultant, spent two days with the VAC team learning how we successfully host gap year students in our program. Her site visit included visits with gap year students at their internship sites, a tour of program housing, a review of our program orientation, and participation in one of our weekly program activities. Over the past few years, we’ve seen a significant increase in participants taking gap years before, during, and after college. Numerous studies continue to highlight the incredible value of taking time off to travel, volunteer, or work before or during higher education.

Katherine, it was a pleasure to spend time with you, and we truly appreciate all the hard work you do to promote the gap year movement in the USA. Your dedication to supporting students in their gap year journeys is inspiring, and we look forward to collaborating with you in the future!

Hellen Gerolymatos McDonald joined us for a site visit in early December. Hellen is the Associate Director of International Programs and a Clinic Professor from the College of Social Work at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. VAC hosts both undergraduate and MSW students from UIUC and Hellen visited some of our best social work sites that have hosted her students over the years.

This visit was also a homecoming of sorts because Hellen was born in Johannesburg and spent a good portion of her youth living in South Africa. We hope to see you back in Cape Town soon, Hellen!

Alumni Spotlight: Leyla Theunissen

Leyla Theunissenwho studied at the University of Pennsylvania and participated in the VACorps program in 2021 during her gap year, has just landed a dream job at SpaceX. She will be working on the International Infrastructure Operations team for Starlink.

During her internship, Leyla worked at Manelisi’s Farm, an urban farming project in Gugulethu, and appears in the video below. Some of our gap year and 1st year college students often worry that if they are not finding the “perfect” internship, they will be falling behind their peers. Leyla is testament that there is great value to be found in exploring multidisciplinary learning opportunities with an open mind. It fosters creative thinking and improves your ability to solve problems.

Congratulations, Leyla, and we will continue to cheer for you from afar as your career literally heads towards the stars!
