Jessica Deer
New Jersey, USA
2018

Jessica participated in a counseling & psychology internship in Cape Town with VACorps in 2018.”When looking for summer plans after my second year of college, I was drawn to Africa; the culture, the language, I knew it would be very different from my home and other places I’ve travelled. I found VACorps and that’s how I found Cape Town. It didn’t take much research about Cape Town and South Africa as a whole for me to want to come. The access to a great internship was just an added bonus. As I’ve been here, on my month long journey, I have grown in so many ways. My confidence, my independence and of course my sense of adventure have all grown. At my internship, I’ve had to learn to communicate with people from a different culture that often didn’t speak my own language. I learned the power of communicating through gestures and body language and how important those things are even when talking in English.

“For anyone with a sense of adventure and a passion for traveling, I would recommend Cape Town and I would recommend VACorps because it’s more than just traveling, you’re making an impact while you’re here.”
