Yolancee is studying her Honors Bachelor of Science degree with a Biology-Biochemistry emphasis. she joined the VACorps program in June 2018, and participated in a medical internship at a local public health clinic.
“I spent 2.5 months in Cape Town and it was not nearly enough time to truly experience everything this beautiful city and country has to offer. My first week was a little bit overwhelming, at first, but VAC made sure I adjusted well from the very beginning. I was never short on activities to do and I’ve met some of my newly found lifelong friends through this program. My internship site was at Heideveld Community Day Clinic and I think I lucked out on internship sites. All of the nurses and doctors were so quick to stop and teach me what they were doing and explain their processes/methods. I never felt alone and that was exactly how I felt with VAC. There’s always interns coming and going, but we’re all one big family. No one feels left out and there’s always someone willing to reach out and help you. I’ve never travelled outside of the United States before this internship, so it was incredibly nerve wracking to do this alone and live on an entirely different continent to do work that is incredibly meaningful that pushed me outside of my comfort zone. I’m grateful for my time in Cape Town and the experiences it gave me, but I’m more grateful for VAC for giving me the chance of a lifetime. Thank you so much for everything. I’m definitely coming back soon.”
