Callie is studying a Bachelor of Science in Community Health at Indiana University. She joined the VACorps program in September 2017 and participated in a sustainability internship at an NGO that teaches people to grow their own food. 

“I’ve always been very interested in the idea of working in third world countries and Africa had always been a place I wanted to go. Last year I finally decided to apply and find out if this was really what I wanted to do. My internship was so much more than I thought it would be. I had the most amazing internship experience and worked alongside some of the greatest people. Before coming to South Africa, I was set on going to law school after college and pursuing that profession as my career, but after this summer I have completely switched my plans because of how great my experience was. I definitely recommend this program to everyone. The VACorps program staff is so dedicated to making sure you have the best experience you can have and are always there for you for whatever you need.

“From day one my internship supervisors were letting me come with them to the different townships to help implement these nutrition workshops they were starting. I thought it was amazing that they were just letting me shadow them, but within a couple of weeks, I was teaching my own programs. It was cool to see them give me all this responsibility and believe that I could be successful from barely knowing me.”
